In A Surgeon’s Memoir: 40 Years at the County, Dr. Stewart Lazow takes you along his somewhat convoluted journey through 40 years at the County, via a series of comical vignettes involving patient encounters and resident foibles. Where appropriate he includes historical perspective and occasional political commentary. Dr. Lazow remains self-deprecating regarding his trials and tribulations, his successful cases as well as heartbreaking failures. The target audience includes all health professionals and anyone who has ever been a patient in a teaching hospital.
Dr. Stewart K. Lazow
Dr. Stewart Lazow is a dual-degreed, dual-licensed Board Certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. His distinguished forty-year professional career culminated as Professor, Vice Chairman, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program Director, and Director of Service at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. His publishing credits are academic in nature. He has published 33 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and eight textbook chapters. He has presented over 100 local, state, national and international lectures.
Dr. Lazow was offered the Chair at three well respected medical centers. In 1996, he had the privilege of becoming only the 28th OMS in the country granted Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons. He was an American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery examiner. He remains a manuscript reviewer for three respected scientific journals. In his 26-year tenure as Program Director, Dr. Lazow had the privilege of training to completion 61 residents, He continues to live vicariously through their accomplishments and those of his three children.
Dr. Lazow attended Columbia University: Columbia College, BA-1975 and Columbia School of Dental and Oral Surgery, DDS-1979. He received his MD from SUNY Brooklyn-College of Medicine, MD-1991. He did his residency training in OMS at Kings County-SUNY Brooklyn 1979-1982 and General Surgery at Kings County-SUNY Brooklyn 1991-1992.
He is an avid, albeit mediocre golfer. He lives in Naples, Florida.
